Kay
“I know Big Team are always there if I need them. They’re our biggest cheerleaders, they genuinely want to see you win.
Having that in your corner is rare, especially in this industry.”
Kay’s journey into the creative industry began with a childhood love of photography, experimenting with early social media edits and capturing moments with friends, before life steered her toward a more traditional path. After experiencing a significant personal loss five years ago, photography became a grounding force, encouraging her to step back outside and reconnect with creativity. What began with landscapes and self-taught experimentation gradually evolved into a growing interest in capturing movement, live energy and atmosphere.
Her first application to Capture Forwards was unsuccessful, but rather than discouraging her, it became a catalyst. She volunteered at Nozstock Festival, strengthened her portfolio, built relationships with other creatives and discovered a genuine passion for music and festival photography. When she successfully joined Capture Forwards the following year, it marked a turning point.
Through Big Team’s support, Kay gained not only practical experience but access to networks that are often difficult to break into. She was connected with Team Love, trusted on projects such as Next Level creating press shots for emerging artists, and offered consistent opportunities to develop her portfolio through live events and club shoots. That trust accelerated her growth. Since engaging with Big Team, Kay has photographed Annie Mac, worked at Glastonbury Festival, Love Saves the Day, Latitude and Forwards Festival, and secured opportunities that led to working with the BBC, being published in The Guardian, stepping onto film sets, and collaborating on a major recent project with a recognisable international brand.
What makes the difference distinctive is the ongoing nature of the support. Big Team has continued to share paid opportunities equitably across the cohort, ensuring fair access, while also providing professional development workshops — including guidance on rates — enabling Kay to confidently establish and secure her day rate. For someone who did not grow up with established creative networks, that access, advocacy and belief have been transformative.
Beyond the credits and festivals, the most significant growth has been personal. From initially lacking confidence in approaching people, Kay now works comfortably with artists, brands and industry professionals on major shoots. The development of her confidence, resilience and professional identity reflects the value of having consistent mentorship, advocacy and community behind her.
Big Team’s impact extends beyond placements or portfolio building, it creates pathways, community and long-term opportunity. Kay’s journey demonstrates how belief, access and sustained support can change not only a career trajectory, but a person’s sense of possibility within the industry.
